Learn Safe Digging, Win a Cool CoServ Prize!

Hello kids! It’s me, Mr. Diggs, CoServ’s safety mascot. Did you know that August 11 is known as National 811 Day? So, it’s the perfect time to remind everyone to call 811 before starting any digging project 16 inches or deeper.
Why is this so important? Well, let’s take a look at what can happen when an underground line is hit:
A SAFETY HAZARD:
- Natural gas doesn’t have a smell, but CoServ adds the chemical compound mercaptan, which smells like rotten eggs, so people can identify it in case of a leak.
- Hitting a natural gas line can cause a gas leak that could result in an explosion or fire.
- Cutting an electric line could cause electrocution.
- A hit water line could cause a big flood.
SERVICE INTERRUPTION: Homes and businesses could temporarily lose natural gas, electric, water or internet services for several hours.
THE EXPENSE: Hit utilities are expensive to repair, ranging from $500 to $10,000. If there’s a gas leak, the fire department could show up and, in some cases, homes and businesses have to temporarily evacuate.
