What to expect on your July bill

North Texas avoided triple digits in June, unlike last year, and thunderstorms kept temperatures mild in the first half of the month.
As a result, CoServ Members should notice slightly lower energy usage in June compared to last year. CoServ Members will also notice a slight decrease in their electricity rate this month.
The average temperature for June was 82.4 degrees, 2.2 degrees cooler than June 2024. This was the mildest June since 2021, according to the Cooling Degree Days.
The chart below explains how utilities use Cooling Degree Days and Heating Degree Days, linking average daily temperatures directly to energy use.
May | June | Difference | |
---|---|---|---|
Average temperature | 74.1 | 82.4 | 8.3 degrees warmer |
Heating Degree Days | 2 | 0 | 2 less HDD |
Cooling Degree Days | 295 | 530 | 235 more CDD |
Utilities and the federal government measure the impact of weather on energy usage by calculating Cooling Degree Days (CDD) and Heating Degree Days (HDD). To calculate the CDD, take the average temperature for a day and subtract it from 65. The higher the number, the more air conditioning will be needed to keep your home comfortable. Temperatures topped out at 95 degrees on June 8 and June 20. Last year, the high for June was 100 degrees and the CDD was 585. Compare that to 2022, one of the hottest Junes in recent memory with nine 100-degree days. The CDD for June 2022 was 640, 21% more than the June we just experienced.
North Texas received 2.2 inches of rain, about 1.5 inches less than normal but still enough to cool things down. The lowest temperature in June was 66 degrees recorded on June 4. Overall, there were 18 days with low temperatures of 75 degrees or less.
RATES
Members will also pay slightly less for electricity this month.
CoServ lowered the Power Cost Recovery Factor (PCRF) by three tenths of a penny to -$0.008, meaning it subtracts that much off the base rate. As a result, Members will pay $3 less for every 1,000 kilowatt-hours on their July bill compared to last month.
This is the 13th straight month that the PCRF has been a negative number.
The Standard residential rate for July will be 12.43 cents per kWh.
We make every effort to keep electricity rates affordable while delivering safe and reliable power to Members. When we save money by making strategic wholesale electricity purchases, we pass that on to Members, as we did this month.
