Transformer Safety

CoServ uses pad-mounted transformers to step down high-voltage electricity on the distribution system before it enters homes. The green boxes are placed in the front yards or backyards in the neighborhoods that have underground electric lines.

Never sit or play near a transformer because they carry high-voltage electricity.

Our CoServ crews also need safe access to transformers for maintenance. Anything that obstructs access to a transformer creates a hazard for our crews and could delay power restoration during an outage.

Padmount transformer boxes: Please maintain a safe zone by keeping any fencing, landscaping, or other obstructions at least 10 feet from the front and 3 feet on the sides and back of the transformer. Remember to consider the plant's mature width prior to planting. Also, permanent structures need to be at least 5 feet from the sides and back. This allows crews to safely service the equipment when needed.

Because of the high voltage, CoServ linemen use a hotstick so they can remain a safe distance away from the transformer. This is why the area around the equipment needs to remain clear of vegetation and obstacles.

Vegetation around CoServ equipment isn't just a safety hazard, it could delay CoServ linemen operations crews as they work to restore power during an outage. Below are some more examples of improper vegetation around electric equipment.
